MG MG Y Type - Towing a Caravan [Trailer]

While on the topic of dynamo's I intend to tow a caravan [please dont tell me it cannot be done my mind is set on it] and in so doing need to feed the fridge with an interrupted +12v supply [the car has been converted to -ve earth], that is when engine is not generating amps the fridge supply is disconected. It could be switched on with the ignition switch but if the engine is on tick-over for any length of time with the lights on it could drain the battery, so if I took the feed from 'D' on the regulator would it prevent the generator from building up its output. Anyone with ideas, I hope have explained myself clearly.
The other alternative is to pack the fridge with ice cubes in a bag while travelling.

You can tow a caravan with a Y - I have a cutting somewhere from 'The Autocar' from about 1953 showing a YB towing a trailer caravn. The registration number of the YB is just about visible as well.

Bryan, wouldn't it be wiser to fit a "modern" alternator if you plan to tow a fridge-equiped caravan? I think one from a Rover 3500 (copes better with the lower revs caused by the larger original Y pully) is the one to have. Neil Cairns wrote a text on how to convert.

Love your idea of pulling a caravan, there's a Dutch YT with a tow hook for a small trailer.

It's good to see that the strain of madness apparently common in Y owners is flourishing in Wales.

I think that the 46 rather small horses will struggle with any reasonable sized caravan, but the best of luck.

Why not put the cost of the caravan to a fund to save money to be rich enough to become eccentric rather than just wierd.

Sorry if I'm letting the side down chaps, but I just cannot get the wife into a tent even at Silverstone!
The picture below was taken at Lago di Garda in the late 70s on one of several trips across Europe in the YA, you can tell that I'm still raving mad. [by the way we returned by way of the Provence Alpes, now that is really stupid!].
This time I have done a few mods such as raised the compression, TD camshaft, TF valves, 1.5inch carb, electric fan, and 5 speed box etc and go faster stripes. I hope to get 55 bhp, still not much but the van is a Compass Lynx.
I agree Willem that an Alternator is the proper answer.
